Spring 2019’s runways turned up the volume in a big way. Voluminous shapes and oversized fits skulked down the runways of Dolce & Gabbana, Celine, Valentino and more, proving that this season, more is more. The silhouette of the moment is 100 percent drama and not for the faint of heart.
Stefano Gabbana himself once said “We’re not about minimalism; we’re massimalismo,” and the power duo proved as much this past season sending voluminous style after voluminous style down the Dolce & Gabbana runway in Milan. One of our favorites is this tiered floral minidress; we love the gathered ruffles, sweet puff sleeves and the feminine print. The cinched waist on this style makes it instantly more wearable.
Gucci went full on ‘80s glam with this boxy kelly green midi with puffed sleeves. The Gucci Spring/Summer collection was an homage to Le Palace in Paris, a nightclub in the ‘70s and ‘80s that was patronized by the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld and more of fashion’s most celebrated designers. We saw that reflected in the styles that strolled the runways in a major way; most notably in the major power shoulders iconic of the time.
This little Celine number caught our eye immediately-- we love the flirty polka dot print and the oversized bow detail of this fun little mini. Hedi Slimane’s first outing at Celine proved to be quite jarring for longtime fans of the brand; the Celine of Spring 2019 is way more Saint Laurent than Phoebe Philo.
For a more wearable take on the trend, take some tips from the styling at Alice + Olivia and pair a boxy coat over a fitted silhouette. Flash a little skin for a sexy edge. Stacey Bendet’s collection was a nod to the jetsetter, channeling looks from cities like Paris, Marrakech, and Positano. One of our favorite looks was this one from Tokyo.
Ths ‘80s popped up yet again on the runway at Louis Vuitton, where Nicolas Ghesquiere showed exaggerated silhouettes and sculptural shapes. We love this dramatic “space jacket” with its pleated, ruched sleeves and oversized shape. Once again, pairing it with a shorter hemline instantly makes it 1000% more wearable in the real world.
Valentino
If we’re talking volume, we have to talk about the look that opened Valentino-- this oversized, off the shoulder maxi is no doubt a statement maker. The off the shoulder silhouette gives it a little bit of a sexier vibe and this look is just pure drama.
