We never strive for average, but there is a new fashion trend, “Normcore,” where dressing average is in fact the point. Every major fashion critic has shed light (and their opinion) on the average-is-chic movement. Buzzfeed coined the term “frumpterable,” which is the perfect way to describe the once fashionable turning to non-assuming, basic (and dare we say a little boring) fashion that makes them look more collegiate than chic.
We got a dose of the trend this summer with the rise of Birkenstocks and Teva-style sandals, and with Fall upon us, the trend continues, by wearing ankle socks with these once-scoffed at sandals or opting sneakers. Think 80s Adidas or New Balance running shoes, which are being paired with jeans, T-shirts, tracksuits, and sweaters under fleece vests. Even the Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, has been seen sporting the look.
Trying to look like you don’t care or choosing simplicity over intricate is at the helm of this, but it doesn’t mean you have to forgo your favorite high-end designers. For the casual, comfortable look choose an Hermes Turtleneck Sweater, with a pair of Rag & Bone Pajama Jeans (available at En Avance) or a Louis Vuitton Runaway Sneaker topped off with an Hermès Jump Hat to get the look and be a part of the Norm crowd.
