We’ve got a new crush — a velvet crush. Lucky for us, our love for the luxe fabric will be requited, as velvet is one of the big fashion trends of the season.
The plush pieces stray this season from traditional black with designers sending a rainbow of hues down the runway. The regal appearance and cuddly texture debuted in rich jewel tones as well as neutrals. Here’s a peek at some of our favorite lustrous pile looks.
Royal Red
Max Mara dominated the trend sending leggy models including Gigi Hadid down the runway wearing royal red velvet looks in styles ranging from loose-fitting pencil skirts to baggy — yet tailored — trousers. The fashion house opted for a monochromatic look that we loved, but if all over red is too much fire for you, break it up and pair with a complementary color in your closet. Alice + Olivia’s Edison Velvet Roll Cuff Tuxedo Blazer is a menswear-inspired piece that features cuffs and a front hook-and-eye closure. The blazer that evokes a bit of a Hugh Heffner vibe, with its black lapels, that can take a look from day to night.
Jewel Tones
Jewels and velvet go hand-in-hand, which is possibly what Giorgio Armani was thinking with his latest collection. Rich purples and emerald greens combine to create a majestic collection. Add a pop of deep purple with a borrowed-from-the-boys blazer or opt for a slightly more causal look with a drawstring waist, anorak-style jacket in deep blue or green.
Neutrals
You can also keep things cool with blush tones and tans when incorporating velvet into your style. Try Alice + Olivia’s Jordan Open Front Vest, which is an ankle length kaftan that will probably be the piece you live in all season. The blush color complements any hue and the cozy factor will make you never want to take it off. Max Mara’s caramel toned velvet suit can be worn together or separate the pieces into a blazer and trouser to mix it up.
