During Art Week 2017, the Miami Design District will play host to several limited special installations that will only be in the area or open to the public for that week. The events range from expansive, like the 30-plus contemporary abstract artists on display in Abstract/Not Abstract, to monumental, like the installation of a massive work by Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama. Below are details of four noteworthy exhibitions that will only be in the neighborhood for a limited time.

The Art of Fashion Presented By WWD and Shutterstock

The interplay between art and fashion has often been tightly woven. With more than a hundred years of experience chronicling fashion, Women's Wear Daily (WWD) has come to be known as "the bible of fashion.” Joining forces with Shutterstock, WWD will present several images of those iconic moments when art and fashion crossed over and created something serendipitous if not sublime. Between both media sources there lies a deep archive that boasts more than six million fashion images. This exhibition will present an elite few that highlight the connections of the ongoing visual conversation between fashion and art.

Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian Present Abstract/Not Abstract

One of the great innovations in modern art came at the height of abstractionism, in the early 20th century with names like Mondrian, Kandinsky, and Miró. The envelope kept being pushed as American artists such as O'Keeffe, de Kooning, and Pollock rose to fame. Abstract art seemed to have reached its popular height with that last artist, in the 1950s, but that doesn’t mean abstraction is still not important in art.

In their third thematic exhibition to be presented in the Miami Design District during Art Week, Larry Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch will present Abstract/Not Abstract at the Moore Building. You might recall Unrealism, which was presented in 2015, and Desire, curated by Diana Widmaier Picasso, in 2016. In the post-abstract art scene, their latest exhibition will explore approaches to the art of visual language in contemporary painting. Abstract/Not Abstract will include works by more than 30 important artists working today, redefining abstraction for our time while harnessing the power of “new technology and industrial techniques to create work that is abstract, yet not purely abstract.”

White Cube Exhibition presents Non-Orientable Nkansa by Ibrahim Mahama

White Cube will bring an off-site project by Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama to the District during Art Week. The large-scale installation artist’s Non-Orientable Nkansa is a towering sculpture comprised of hundreds of so-called “shoemaker boxes.” The artist negotiated for these utilitarian boxes, which are cobbled together from structural materials to hold practical tools for polishing and repairing shoes. Among the boxes are the detritus of the trade, like heels and nails, as well as tools, like hammers. This work stands as Mahama’s continuing inquiry into the life of materials and their dynamic potential.
