Luxe Michelin-Starred Korean Barbecue Restaurant Cote Arrives in The Design District

South Florida isn’t exactly known for its Korean barbecue offerings, but that all might change soon with the debut of New York City import Cote (3900 NE 2nd Ave.), opening to the public on Friday, February 12, in the Miami Design District.

This marks the first location outside of New York City for the acclaimed Korean steakhouse founded by restaurateur Simon Kim. The restaurant has maintained a Michelin-starred rating since its opening in 2017, along with being named on Eater’s Best New Restaurants list in 2018, earning a spot on GQ’s Best New Restaurants in America, and garnering three stars from Eater NY’s food critic Ryan Sutton.

The Korean-style steakhouse made a name for itself by serving up 45-day, dry-aged beef — which is typically found in high-end steakhouses — in a Korean barbecue format that is prepared at the table on smokeless grills. The menu highlights a variety of prime cuts and American wagyu that is dry-aged in the restaurant’s on-site red light dry-aging room. Dishes are served with pickled vegetables that are preserved in the restaurant’s own vegetable fermentation lab. Favorites like the “steak and eggs,” made with filet mignon tartare, Kaluga Hybrid caviar, and milk toast, as well as a Miami-exclusive ceviche featuring Amberjack, snapper, cobia, and trout roe with thinly sliced pickled fennel and chojang vinaigrette, can also be found on the menu.

But the most popular order at Cote is the butcher’s feast — which also has made its way to the Miami menu — and features a selection of chef’s choice of cuts along with different vegetables and kimchi, egg soufflé, two stews, rice, and soft serve for just $54 per person. For those who want to go more high-brow, a 10-course steak omakase is available for $165 per person.

Under the direction of James Beard Award-nominated beverage director Victoria James and master sommelier Mia Van de Water, Cote’s award-winning beverage program will offer hard-to-find vintages and large format bottles just like its NYC counterpart. Bartender Sondre Kasin, who was featured in Esquire’s 2019 “Best Bars in America” for his cocktail list at Cote NYC, will serve up drinks inspired by the Magic City.

Similar to Cote’s NYC outpost, the 100-plus seat dining room, designed by architecture studio MNDPC, will offer its popular interactive cooking experience on tableside smokeless grills, which are known for ventilating air 6.6 times more frequently per hour compared to a standard restaurant — a protocol added in to help prevent COVID-19 and other airborne viruses. The space boasts modern art pieces; an oval-shaped bar, and two private dining spaces: Simon’s Room and the PK Room, an ode to the developer T.V. Moore, who turned his pineapple farm in the 1920s into the Design District, where the restaurant resides.

Cote will be open daily from 5 p.m. until midnight. For questions or to make a reservation call 305-434-4668.
