Artist and fashion designer Thom Browne talks about his first major large-scale public art sculpture called “Palm Tree 1” (2019). The installation was on display in the Miami Design District during Art Basel and Design Miami 2019.
The tree is clothed with preppy fabrics, in signature Thom Browne style, yet is set in black sand and topped with a black mirror.
“It draws on a lot of my influence in regards to celebrating Americana, but also to the tension between how, sometimes, the American Dream is not always as bright and cheery as everybody thinks it might be,” Thom says.
Thom says he thought doing a site-specific installation would be interesting in this space because it required working with a large scale.
