The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) recently celebrated ten years of presence here in Miami Design District, and with that, shared the exciting news that their footprint will grow significantly. ICA, in partnership with the Knight Foundation and with dedicated Trustees, has solidified that it will expand into 23 41st Street, an address that District patrons likely recognize as the previous home of the de la Cruz Collection.
ICA Miami is an admission-free museum that will now bring 30,000 square feet of added space to house the permanent collection, welcome more special exhibits, offer more space for lectures and performance programming, have a dedicated lab for digital and audio-visual art creation, and classrooms for educational community events to create a robust and welcoming cultural hub in the Design District.
Renovations are set for the expansion site, with a tentative opening around late 2025.
“It is fitting that the space, which for almost two decades as the de la Cruz Collection presented thought-provoking, innovative contemporary art exhibitions, will continue that tradition,” Trustee and longtime supporter Craig Robins shared in a statement about the expansion.
ICA Miami provides an important international platform to showcase the work of local, emerging, and under-recognized artists, and advances the public appreciation and understanding of the most innovative art of our time. Apart from the artwork on display, ICA Miami is a place that welcomes the public to listen, learn, and participate in thought-provoking conversations and seminars through the The Art + Research Center (A+RC), which is the museum’s research department and graduate-level initiative which seeks to drive a more robust and critical cultural dialogue in South Florida and beyond.
Alex Gartenfeld, Artistic Director of ICA Miami, shared, “At this pivotal moment in Miami’s arts landscape history, ICA Miami’s expansion represents a natural next step in its trajectory by providing crucially needed space to share the work of important artists and to deepen our educational reach.”
We are excited for the future and eager to welcome the next ten years of ICA Miami. Interested donors who wish to be a part of the ongoing ICA Miami legacy can make a donation here.
