In Milan, Sunday night means one thing: Le Specialità.

What started in 1977 as a tiny pizza shop transformed in the ’90s when the Cummo family took over, added a full kitchen, and developed a signature dough that’s impossibly thin, crisp, and light. Word spread. Then came the fashion editors, the designers, and eventually the celebrities. A 2015 collaboration with the Billionaire Club sealed its status as a fashion-world favorite.

Giorgio Armani eats there. So does Miuccia Prada. Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted. Emily Ratajkowski has a pizza named after her.

Every weekend, Milan empties out as locals retreat to the coast or mountains. But by Sunday evening, they return – and gather at Le Specialità. It's more than dinner. It's an unofficial creative reunion. Three-hour waits are common. No PR blitz. No velvet ropes. Just pizza and the right kind of crowd.

Now, that tradition has made its way to the Miami Design District.

A Location Chosen by Design

Federico Giammarusto, who’s leading the brand’s expansion, scouted South Beach and Wynwood before choosing the Design District.

“One of our key elements is being very nearby either design or fashion,” he explains. The District, with its art, architecture, and luxury retail, mirrors Milan’s fashion quarter—and attracts the same mix of creatives and tastemakers.

The space, designed by the Rockwell Group, features a 10-foot mosaic-tiled pizza oven at the back, booths lining one wall, a pizza bar overlooking the kitchen, and a separate cocktail bar tucked along the side.

Art plays a central role. The walls feature pieces by KAWS, Takashi Murakami, Rashid Johnson, and Cameron Welch. Johnson’s “Standing Broken Men” appears near the restrooms. Murakami’s “Eye Love SUPERFLAT” watches over the dining room. KAWS’ “Jalouse” greets you at the entrance.

Pizza, Pasta, and a Little Parm

The dough is the star: made with minimal yeast and a special technique that leaves guests feeling full but never heavy. It comes in classic, gluten-free, and whole wheat options.

The Emrata pizza pairs margherita with ham and burrata. The Gran Biscotto leans salty and savory. The Pata Negra is topped with Spanish ham.

Beyond pizza, the menu includes wagyu meatballs, vitello tonnato, eggplant parmesan, and fritto misto with shrimp and artichoke. Pastas include rigatoni carbonara, fettuccine wagyu Bolognese, cacio e pepe, and tonnarelli alla Norma. There’s also branzino, Dover sole, veal Milanese, and a 16-ounce wagyu ribeye. The wine list features more than 150 bottles, mostly Italian. Yes, people really do drink Masseto with pizza.

Miami might not empty out on Fridays the way Milan does, but in the Design District, Le Specialità is creating its own Sunday ritual.

Le Specialità is now open at 40 NE 41st Street in the Miami Design District.
