Miami is alive with events, concerts, exhibitions and all the good stuff that comes with the cooler September air.  And while most locals have spent the past couple months looking for shade, it’s time to re-emerge from hibernation for the premiere edition of Miami Design District’s Day Into Night music event.

On Saturday, September 17 from noon to 10 p.m., celebrated musicians, acoustic guitars, deep house and Afro Latin Soul performances in artful spaces will be peppered throughout one of the city’s most creative neighborhoods.

With a full day of exciting free programming and discovery, here’s the perfect way to spend your day and night in the Miami Design District:

(Netscape)

Noon: Keep it light and airy while Ivo Carvalho curates the vibes on his acoustic guitar in Palm Court’s second floor mezzanine. Special guests include Jay Rodriguez (wind instrumentalist), Phoenix Rivera (drummer) and Tantra Zawadi (spoken word poet), while enjoying complimentary homemade Italian sorbetto samples in assorted flavors (all dairy free) from Monteleone.  Palm Court, 140 NE 39th Street, mezzanine and second levels.

2 p.m.: Stay awhile longer for a midday swing in German designer Konstantin Grcic’s Netscape installation or for requisite selfies with Xavier Veilhan’s sculpture of Le Corbusier and Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye  Dome™. Palm Court, 140 NE 39th Street, mezzanine and second levels.

3 p.m.: Head east toward AGAPE featuring Nadia Harris and Erick Paredes.  A local gem that champions energy, diversity and a gumbo of world sounds, rock out to real Miami fusion and roots music. 3930 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 200.

(Renaud Jerez exhbit at ICA Miami)

4:30 p.m.: Get a snack at Mercato or a sampler of Ladurée’s world famous Parisian macarons before stopping by ICA, Miami. Open until 7 p.m.—later than most of Miami’s museums— current exhibitions include Laura Lima, Renaud Jerez, Susan Te Kahurangi King and Ida Applebroog. 4040 NE 2nd Avenue.

5:30 p.m.: This may be a good time to think about your wardrobe before shops close at 7 p.m.  There will be dancing, lots of dancing.

6 p.m.: Raise the vibe in Return to Afro Latin Soul, a kaleidoscopic performance by Jay Rodriguez and dei 7 free range music.  A Grammy-nominated saxophonist, flautist, clarinetist, film composer and producer, Rodriguez is a Barranquilla-born, New York-based legend.  He’s recorded and/or arranged for hundreds of artists from Elvis Costello to Patti Labelle, and continues to work with bands such as The Roots (on the Jimmy Fallon Show) and singer/songwriter Michael Kiwanuka and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. 3930 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 200.

6:50 p.m.: Take a brief stroll through the Design District’s Paseo Ponti corridor for a close encounter with Kate Moss — Mark Quinn’s monumental sculpture Myth Fortuna —and for master sculptor Fernando Botero’s Maternity, a larger-than-life representation of mother and child.  Paseo Ponti Corridor, between 39th and 40th Streets.

(Palm Court)

7 p.m.: It’s the The Children of Disco with DJ Richie Jones and Eric Kupper!  Known for their frequent collaborations, Kupper stands out as a founding figure in house music for his work with Def Mix Productions in the mid-80s and early 90s.  Special guests such Bonnie Pointer of the Grammy-Award winning Pointer Sisters will be joining the party with a few live songs. Palm Court, 140 NE 39th Street.

8 p.m.: Though Jones and Kupper’s live set continues through 10 p.m., remember what really counts with Robert Indiana’s Love—another iconic sculpture worth seeing in Palm Court.

10 p.m.: Dive into the Vortex, one of two dynamic murals by 2 x 4, a collaborative studio based in New York.  Challenged with creating a bold graphic work that questions the nature of design, this piece draws the viewer’s gaze in a winding interplay between distance and perspective.  NE 38th Street between NE 2nd and NE 1st Avenues.

(Michael's Genuine Food & Drink)

10:15 p.m.: Dinner at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink? Munch on a brand new menu from chef de cuisine Saul Ramos. Plus, the kitchen closes at midnight! 130 NE 40th Street.

Day Into Night takes place on Saturday, September 17 from noon to 10 p.m. at locations throughout the Miami Design District.
