What Lies Beneath is a group exhibition curated by Cuban-born Miami-based curator Direlia Lazo that delves into themes of belonging, identity, and the inner forces that shape us, examining the complexities that lie beneath the surface of representation.

At the core of this project is an exploration of form, appearance, and reflection in constant flux—where identity emerges as an ongoing process, shaped through exchanges and expressions. In these interstitial spaces, identities are forged—fluid, elusive, and more connected to the complexities of everyday life than to rigid societal definitions. The exhibition captures the transfigurations of the body and both collective and personal identities, highlighting moments of profound emotional transformation that push the boundaries of conventional identity norms. This exhibition also reflects the gallery’s dedication to performance as a medium and resonates with Miami’s vibrant cultural landscape, where performance becomes a powerful tool for exploring community, belonging, and identity. Through its dynamic approach, What Lies Beneath speaks directly to the city’s social pulse, embracing performance as a form of expression uniquely suited to Miami’s diverse fabric. By engaging with the tensions between surface and depth, between what is seen and what lies beneath, the project offers a platform for deeper reflection on the unseen forces that shape us all, inviting audiences to consider how we represent ourselves and what it means to inhabit the spaces we call our own.
